In Spring 2005, the University of Pennsylvania School of Design updated Jean Gottman's 1961 study of Megalopolis by revisiting the urbanized area that stretches from southern Maine to northern Virginia. Today, the Northeast Megaregion reveals many of the same traits of urban density, intense activities and movement of people, goods and services that made it the first megaregion in the mid-twentieth century. The report lays out several challenges the Northeast must face as it prepares to add 17 million additional people by the year 2050, including transportation, environmental, and economic competitiveness issues.
