Benefits of Intercity Passenger Rail Hearing in House

On June 26, the House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials held a hearing on Benefits of Intercity Passenger Rail. Gov. Mark Schweiker, the chairman of Philadelphia's CEO Council for Growth and President and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce testified on behalf of the Philadelphia business community, stressing the importance of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor service to Philadelphia's economic competitiveness, and the importance of maintaining the Corridor infrastructure to SEPTA commuter service in the region.

His testimony included four key recommendations. They include:

1) Find a secure source of funding for intercity passenger rail.

2) Define "state of good repair" and provide funding to achieve it.

3) Improve trip time on the Northeast Corridor.

4) Require Amtrak to work with the states and commuter railroads along the Northeast Corridor to develop a plan to increase the capacity of the corridor.

This paper was commissioned by Regional Plan Association for the Rockefeller Urban Summit, which this summer will host a team of planners, public officials and busness leaders to shape a framework for growth in America in the 21st Century.

An Emerging Biotech Belt

Cleveland1.jpg pittsburgh3.jpg
Could a Cleveland-Pittsburgh biotech-belt be forming? This is the hope of two venture capital firms in the two regions, which are working together to cross-promote each other’s biotech sectors, as reported by an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this May. BioEnterprise of Cleveland and the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse have forged a partnership to establish a strong biomedical and life sciences research corridor, similar to Minneapolis-St. Paul and the Research Triangle in North Carolina. Baiju Shah, president of BioEnterprise, and John Manzetti, head of the Greenhouse, believe that lack of marketing and a negative image are impediments to attracting investments in bioscience to their regions. They are trying to turn that image around. By linking their two regions as one, biotech “megaregion,” the combined amount of research talent is on par with the greatest concentrations in the world.
